Is that how you say it?
I've been asked this several times and I would like to set the record straight on how to pronounce the names of the following two foods.
MOCHI
The "ch" is soft. So it's pronounced "moe-chee."
When it comes to Japanese food, your best bet is go to with how they pronounce their vowels:
a = ah
e = eh
i = ee
o = oh
u = oo
Try it: wasabi, maki, sukiyaki, mochi. There! Easy peasy.
PHO
It's not pronounced "foe." It's short and sweet - "f-uh" like "huh."
Vietnamese is trickier, as is Thai. I'm not even going to pretend to give you advice on how to pronounce most of it but I know, for sure, that pho is prounounced like you're saying "huh."
Any other words you'd like to clarify? If I don't know or am not sure I will be happy to ask my fellow Asian counterparts for clarification!
